What Is a Sebaceous Cyst?
A sebaceous cyst is a non-cancerous, closed sac that forms beneath the skin. It is filled with an oily, semisolid material called sebum and usually develops from a blocked hair follicle or oil gland.
Sebaceous cysts can occur on any part of the body and are typically painless. However, they may become tender if they become inflamed or infected, which is when medical attention may be needed.
💡 Good News
Sebaceous cysts are benign (non-cancerous) and often don't require treatment unless they become problematic. Many small cysts resolve on their own over time.
Treatment Options
The treatment of sebaceous cysts depends on their size, location, and whether they are causing any symptoms. Here are the different options:
👁️ Observation
Small and asymptomatic cysts may not require treatment. We may recommend monitoring the cyst to see if it resolves on its own.
🌡️ Warm Compresses
Applying warm compresses to the cyst several times a day can help reduce inflammation and promote drainage naturally.
Antibiotics
If the cyst becomes infected or inflamed, we may prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection before considering other treatments.
🔪 Incision and Drainage
For larger or symptomatic cysts, we may perform a minor procedure to make a small incision and drain the cyst's contents. This provides relief and helps the cyst heal.
✂️ Complete Excision
If the cyst is recurrent, bothersome, or shows signs of infection, complete surgical excision may be recommended. This involves removing the entire cyst and surrounding tissue to prevent recurrence.
Don't Squeeze
It is essential not to squeeze or pop the cyst yourself. This can lead to infection, worsen the condition, or cause the cyst to become more difficult to treat properly.
After Treatment: Wound Care
If you've had a cyst drained or removed, proper wound care is essential for healing:
- Keep the area clean and dry: Proper hygiene is essential to prevent infection and promote healing
- Cover the wound: Keep the wound covered with a sterile dressing until it heals completely
- Avoid strenuous activities: Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities for a period to prevent strain on the wound
- Follow up as directed: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor healing
When to Seek Care
While most sebaceous cysts are harmless, you should seek medical attention if you notice:
- Rapid growth of the cyst
- Signs of infection (redness, warmth, increased pain, pus)
- The cyst becomes painful or tender
- The cyst is in a location that causes discomfort
- You're uncertain whether a growth is a sebaceous cyst
